The Beijing Museum of Natural History is located in the Tianqiao area along the Southern Central Axis of Beijing. The Beijing Museum of Natural History was founded in April 1951 as the Central Museum of Natural History under the Ministry of Culture and was officially renamed the Beijing Museum of Natural History in 1962.
The Beijing Museum of Natural History is the first large-scale natural history museum independently developed by the new China. It mainly engages in the collection, research, exhibition, and science education in the fields of paleontology, zoology, botany, and anthropology. It is one of the first National First-Grade Museums and provides leadership to the National Committee for Natural History Museums.
The museum covers an area of 15,000 square meters, with a gross floor area of over 23,000 square meters and exhibition areas of 10,000 square meters. It now has a collection of 326,700 specimens of various kinds and an annual attendance of 1.8 million.
