Use the collection resources to present the cultural exchange and interaction between China and foreign countries

Under the initiative of "One Belt And One Road", museums dig deep the connotation of collections containing their own regional culture and historical culture, and strive to improve the level and quality of exhibitions.

Hosted by the Palace Museum, the exhibition "The Forbidden City and the 'Maritime Silk Road'" opened on May 9, 2017. This exhibition is the first time that the Palace Museum has made use of its collection to hold a large-scale exhibition reflecting the Maritime Silk Road. The cultural relics are mainly from the gifts exchanged between the Ming and Qing dynasties, reflecting the communication and interaction between the Ming and Qing dynasties and the outside world.


To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to China, the exhibition "Long Miles: World Heritage Silk Road", sponsored by the State Administration of Cultural Heritage, opened at the Hong Kong Museum of History on Nov 28, 2017. The exhibition brings together for the first time precious cultural relics from China, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, showcasing not only the splendid historical process of the ancient Silk Road, but also its splendid cultural landscape.



"China and the World -- Shipwrecks of the Maritime Silk Road and Trade Porcelain Exhibition" is on display at the China Maritime Museum on the 518 International Museum Day in 2018. The image reveals the ties between ancient times and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, and vividly presents the Silk Road spirit of "peace and cooperation, openness and inclusiveness, mutual learning, mutual benefit and win-win".

The "One Belt And One Road" initiative provides a new opportunity to promote the exchange and cooperation in museums between China and countries along the Belt and Road. Museums have also introduced a number of foreign exhibitions with the characteristics of foreign civilizations to China for exhibition, and some excellent domestic exhibitions have even gone abroad to the world.

On June 9, 2018, the exhibition "From the Silk Road to the Renaissance" was opened at the National Museum of China. The exhibition fully reflects the closer exchanges and cooperation between domestic and foreign museums in the new era, and works together to write a new chapter of the "Silk Road Spirit" featuring peace and cooperation, openness and inclusiveness, mutual learning and mutual benefit.


On September 12, 2017, the Silk Road Treasures Exhibition opened at the Conservation, Research and Exhibition Center of the Dunhuang Academy. The exhibition focuses on the treasures unearthed from four major archaeological sites in Afghanistan. Visitors can not only appreciate the exotic treasures and the splendid Silk Road culture, but also have a deeper understanding of the diversity and inclusiveness of civilizations.

In October 2016, the exhibition "Treasures of the Silk Road" sponsored by the China Cultural Relics Exchange Center was successfully held in the Riga Museum of the Latvian National Art Museum. The exhibition presents the integration and common development of different civilizations, and reveals the historical thread of the integration and coexistence of diverse cultures and the mutual influence of different civilizations.

Academic exchange: discuss heritage protection along the "One Belt And One Road"

Since the "One Belt And One Road" initiative was put forward, as of October 2017, the State Administration of Cultural Heritage has carried out 15 overseas joint archaeological projects with countries along the Belt and Road, and assisted five countries in restoring cultural relics. At the same time, local museums and cultural relics protection institutions have actively carried out academic discussions and project exchanges and cooperation to inject new connotations into the protection, utilization and display of cultural heritage and cultural relics along the "One Belt And One Road" route.

On the eve of the "518 International Museum Day" in 2016, the Museum and Education Sub-Forum of the "One Belt And One Road" Cultural Heritage Protection Exchange and Cooperation Forum was held in Xi 'an. With museums and education as the theme, we will fully tap the superior resources of museums along the "One Belt And One Road" countries in education, and realize the new situation of "complementary advantages, mutual benefit and win-win" in museum education through this forum.

On the 518 International Museum Day 2017, the Capital Museum held the signing ceremony of "Silk Road International Museum Alliance" and the One Belt And One Road International Museum Cooperation Seminar was also held at the same time. Liu Yuzhu, director of the National Cultural Heritage Administration, delivered a keynote speech at the conference, and seven museum curators from different countries delivered keynote speeches to share their research findings and practical experience.


At the end of 2017, the annual meeting of Exhibition and Communication Professional Committee of Museums Association of China was held in Xi 'an. Focusing on the theme of "Museum Cooperation and Exhibition Exchange in the Context of 'One Belt And One Road'", the conference shared information on the 2017 and 2018 entry and exit exhibitions. Eighty-six museums and 13 service providers of cultural and museum enterprises from 30 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions participated in the exchange and discussion, exchanging in-depth views on issues such as exhibitions and regional co-construction.

The International Symposium on Maritime Silk Road: Research and Conservation Cooperation was held in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, in June 2018. Experts attending the meeting held in-depth discussions on the research, protection and cooperation of the Maritime Silk Road and put forward a large number of constructive opinions on the application of the Maritime Silk Road as a World Heritage Site.

In addition, in August 2018, the Gansu Provincial Museum held the "Mutual Evidence of Historical Documents and Archaeological Remains -- the International Symposium on Silk Road". 120 Chinese and foreign scholars discussed the latest achievements of Silk Road research and "One Belt And One Road" cultural exchanges and mutual learning among civilizations.

In order to expand the cooperation with cultural relics protection departments and academic institutions of countries along the "One Belt And One Road", we will continue to carry out transnational joint heritage protection. In November 2018, representatives from China and five Central Asian countries held academic exchanges on the protection of cultural relics in countries along the "One Belt And One Road" route in Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan.

In recent years, the Shanghai Museum has made active contact with some countries along the "One Belt And One Road" route and actively promoted comprehensive cooperation, which has achieved initial results. In August 2018, the Shanghai Museum and Sri Lanka jointly set up a joint archaeological team, which provided important material evidence for the study of the ancient sea silk, which is of great academic significance for promoting the joint application of the sea silk for international cultural heritage. On October 23, 2018, the Shanghai Museum "One Belt And One Road" Research and Development Center was established, and a series of archaeological and exhibition plans around the "Belt and Road", especially the Maritime Silk Road, were announced, which will continue to contribute to the expansion and deepening of cultural exchanges and cooperation along the routes.



During the period of the eighth "expo", from Britain, India, Finland, Brazil, the United States, Italy, Egypt, Germany, Australia, Japan and other countries more than 40 of the nearly hundred foreign guests will also take part in the "expo" special topic discussion, at the same time "silk road museum conference" will be held during the "expo". While uniting regional development, we will further expand the international influence of this expo.
